Recommended. Although the combo of director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) and actor Michael B. Jordan (Creed) has generated lots of money, it’s been a letdown for some of us after the superb debut of Fruitvale Station. On Sinners Coogler doubles down with Jordan playing twin, juke-joint proprietors and gets back his groove. But put that aside, Sinners combines O Brother, Where Art Thou with Blacula. Trust me; it works. This is a delightfully engaging movie, although the ending was unnecessarily awkward. The fascinating thing is that the movie pits two groups, white string bands (the zombies) against black Mississippi delta blues bands – – like Elvis sucking the blood of Big Mama Thornton. And similar to all modern zombie movies, the gore and gnawed flesh is excessive, but not comparatively shocking. Well-featured is a hard-as-nails Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) and lovely Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty). Or. . . is that the other way ‘round?
Dogs Bark . . . when the elephant passes.
