Strongly recommended. Blue Moon is a filmed one-man show, brilliantly featuring Ethan Hawke (Boyhood) and a great supporting cast. It’s set in the New York beanery, Sardi’s, where GOAT Broadway lyricist Lorenz (Larry) Hart holds court. The witty script – – written by high-school teacher Robert Kaplow – – consists of Hart’s engaging dialogue with various interesting folk: author E.B. White, Hart’s former partner Richard Rogers (Andrew Scott, Fleabag), and bartender Eddie (Bobby Cannavale, Boardwalk Empire), who’s trying to keep Hart on the wagon. Hart is waiting for college student/inamorata Elizabeth Weiland (Margaret Qualley, The Substance). The event is the opening of Oklahoma! . . . the first production of now Rogers and Hammerstein; the heart of the night is Larry’s obsession with Elizabeth portrayed with Qualley’s fey awkwardness. Scott plays Rogers with guarded anger, letting in on the pain of depending upon alcoholic Hart. His is a sad life but herein told with humor and compassion.
Dogs Bark . . . when the elephant passes.
