Ophelia Recast – – Sentimental Value (2025, Norway, Color, 133 min) – – 9 February2025

Strongly recommended. To spin Bernard Malmund . . . there’s the life we live and the life imagined. For a creative person, the latter is reported to the world. When the actual and imagines lives are blended – – as director Gustav Borg (Stellan Skarsgård, Good Will Hunting) attempts in Sentimental Value – – the results can be both maddening and triumphant. Borg’s family includes his variably – – but not unjustifiably – – estranged daughters Nora (Renate Reinsve, The Worst Person In The World) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, The Last King) and he’s attempting to convince accomplished actor, Nora, to star in a film about his conjoined lives. These three actors – – along with Elle Fanning (A Complete Unknown) – – playing an American actress, tell this story with tender affection and Oscar nods, pointing to writer/director Joachim Trier, nominated for three Oscars (The Worst Person In The World) burgeoning talent. At 51, Trier sees life with the eyes of a 70-year-old.
